Convened a set of scholars and practitioners from Latin America to jointly author a policy statement that was then debated in an international conference convened in Latin America.
Challenges you faced and/or still face?
Building political will among top government officials in the region (particularly finance ministries, central banks; transforming the "Development" and "globalization" debate in the US, in a way that addresses the structural and policy causes of global poverty and underdevelopment, as opposed to the "charity" framework that still dominates many development organizations based in the US and Europe; building a political constituency for these ideas within the US.

The conference, convened in Bogotá in September, resulted in the public endorsement of the policy statement by several UN officials and regional political figures and engaged a number of NGO's and labor groups that have been involved in similar processes to help build a "broader front" on these issues, clearly articulate a coherent, alternative development policy framework, and build synergy with groups working on similar issues.

Issue(s) you addressed?
Over the past 10 years, IPS has done path-breaking research on the negative contribution of the World Bank to global warming. Through careful research linked to networking and campaigning, IPS has helped to press the Bank to get out of coal financing to eliminate some lending that contributes to global warming, and to create broader public awareness of the role of public finance in global warming.
What did you do to achieve results? (If applicable, you may want to mention partners here.)
We produced the hot facts and released them through the media and allied organizations. We helped strategize new ways to put pressure on the Bank. Our allies were both in the South and the North.
Challenges you faced and/or still face?
A key challenge is corporate influence in the Bank. Another is that we did not succeed as well as we need to in convincing Southern governments to press the Bank onto a clean energy path.
Achievements--current and/or anticipated?
We are working with allies to strategize a new phase of the work.
